The internet has certainly made our world smaller and allowed for a faster and more efficient means of sharing information and making transactions, no matter where we are.  This great dependence on a cyberspace that is safe and secure will influence some significant changes in cyber security trends in the coming year.

Gordon Hannah summarizes five such trends to come in 2012 in his article Securing cyberspace top priority for 2012:

• Federal initiatives changing the way agencies secure their IT infrastructures
• Technology innovation changing the devices we use and ways we connect and share information
• Shift from creating identities to managing identities across domains
• Cyber Intelligence that improves the ability to assess risks beyond an agency’s network
• Fiscal restraint to ensure initiatives yield greater efficiency and effectiveness

One of the next key identity credential upgrades to look for in the near future, in the U.S. at least, is switching to an electronic driver license.

Transitioning to an electronic driver license could greatly increase the security of the identity holder’s personal information, reducing the likelihood of theft, as well as provide a better method of storing and updating drivers’ records.

Many countries are already using the electronic driver license with great success, even combining the ID with various innovative applications. The number of these standardized, secure electronic IDs is expected to grow by 54% by 2015.

In the first quarter of 2012, the next draft of the FIPS 201-2 is expected to be released. Will the use of PIV on mobile devices or even using a mobile device as a credential be included in the new standard? US government smart card officials are watching closely.

Computer scientists at the NIST, National Institute of Standards and Technology, are working on a solution for PIV enabled smart phones and tablets, focusing on advanced PIV and derived credentials.
