Those Drivers License, Passport & ID Photos

If that photo on your passport looks like you're too sick to travel or your employee ID badge picture looks like something that belongs on the post office wall, here are a few hints to improve your results next time someone asks you to say "cheese."

  • When you're in front of the camera, conjure up thoughts of some special person you like very much. Imagine that he or she just walked into the room. Your powerful imagination will take charge of your facial muscles, and your expression will be you at your very best.
  • Think positively. Look directly into the lens and tell yourself, "This time I am going to look natural and relaxed," and you will.
  • Don't force a smile. Forcing anything makes people look pained and unnatural. Simply throw your shoulders back and, if you feel like smiling, smile.

And these tips from IDenticard Systems, Lancaster, Pa., one of America's leading producers of ID badging systems

  • Avoid head-on camera shots. Sit with your shoulders at a 45-degree angle to the camera; turn your head so you're facing the lens directly. This tends to make you look thinner.
  • Ask the photographer to use a lower angle to minimize the appearance of balding.
  • To reduce the impact of a predominant double chin, opt for an elevated camera angle.
  • Moisten your lips just before the picture is snapped. The reflected flash adds sparkle.
  • Dress simply. Solid colors work best. Avoid clothing with "busy" prints or floral patterns. Also avoid shiny accessories and high turtlenecks (which can make your face look fuller).
  • Medium to dark plain colors are best against most backgrounds, says IDenticard, unless the background is white. Light colors against a dark or medium background can cause distractions and add the appearance of extra weight.

IDenticard says its popular ID badging systems eliminate the need for instant film and allow people to preview their ID photos before they're printed on badges. So those droopy-eyed pictures are a thing of the past.
