On The Fast Track to Security Identification

Parents no longer need worry that their college kids are going hungry... at least not at Marywood University. According to Stephen J. Pugliese, Director of Student Activities and Leadership Development, upgrading security to IDenticard's IVIS Plus 1000 digital imaging system and integrating photo ID badges with the food service program not only simplifies security, but facilitates last-minute additions to a hungry student's meal card. More importantly, Pugliese says upgrading from a film-based Polaroid camera system to a digital system fully integrated with the University's AS400 database system has been an effective and efficient improvement, and has provided the University with one uniform card.

Pugliese says the University is now moving forward on a fast track to identification and, he anticipates, access integration down the road. Located in Scranton, PA, Marywood University student enrollment nears 3,000 -- and all student data already existed in the University's database.

"The IVIS Plus was able to interface directly with the information," says Pugliese, "making re-keying of data unnecessary." This compatibility was one vital prerequisite in selecting an imaging system.

The "Pacer Points" Program
The IVIS Plus system allows the University cashier's office to encode information on a student's meal plan directly on the ID card. Students run the mag stripe through a reader as they check out, without having to produce cash. Operating on a program called "Pacer Points," students pay in advance for a regular meal plan, and can buy extra meals by purchasing more points.

With the added benefit of each student's photo being stored in the digital imaging system, lost ID cards can be reprinted, without the student needing to be re-photographed. Security can also access a student's ID photo within the system, allowing for immediate positive identification.

Information Access at the Library
With a full stomach, students can eventually get around to the necessity of study, again utilizing their ID card. Students gain access to library publications and computer systems, including Nexis to aid research, both at the library, on University laboratory computers or on-line away from campus. Students either swipe their ID card through bar code readers or enter a code number located on their ID card.

Security Down The Road
Because the University anticipates adding access control to the system, Pugliese says the ID cards include a third mag stripe for future use. In a few years, he anticipates access control to dormitory buildings. He also foresees such applications as students swiping ID cards at mandatory seminars, so professors can track attendance, make purchases at the student bookstore, and gain access to laundry facilities. Wait a minute, students do laundry?
