Cadillac Dealership Takes Innovative Approach to Tracking Vehicles
At checkout counters today, you'll find automated systems with bar codes tracking all sorts of things -- groceries, books, music CDs, videos and Cadillacs.
Yes... Cadillacs. In fact, America's largest exclusive Cadillac dealership is keeping tabs on its luxury vehicles with the bar code technology of IDenticard Systems, Inc.'s IVIS Plus 500 digital imaging system.
Located in Phoenix, AZ, Lund has earned a reputation as the premier Cadillac dealership worldwide. "We have 200 employees and a high volume of vehicles entering and leaving the property each day, whether it's for service, road testing, demonstrations, loaner cars or rentals," said David Drake, service director, Lund Cadillac. Drake said the nature of the traffic made tracking vehicles a challenge until the dealership installed the IVIS Plus 500 digital imaging system.
Using the IVIS Plus, Lund customized its identification cards so that each employee's photo ID badge is bar coded. When removing a vehicle from the property, an employee's bar code is scanned at the security checkpoint, as is the vehicle's code. With this system, the dealership keeps a record of the date and time of each vehicle's departure and return, as well as the identification of the person with approved access.
"The system is terrific," said Drake. "It comes with everything we need to make the badges here in our office. We design the card, take the photo, print the bar code on the badge and laminate it. It's easy to use and very reliable." The digital technology provides a clear, sharp image and all data, including the photo, is stored in the system. Therefore, there's no need for film or film storage, and badges can be reissued or updated easily using the stored photo. Drake said he has been especially impressed by the system's search feature, which makes finding "any bit of information fast and easy."
The ID cards brought Lund an unexpected customer advantage as well. "There's a lot of paperwork involved in car transactions and it can be somewhat time-consuming," explained Drake. "By scanning ID cards, we're able to get paperwork done more rapidly because a lot of the information we need has already been stored in the system. By simply scanning a card, we have all that pertinent information at our fingertips."
Another feature Drake found attractive in the IVIS Plus 500 is its expandability. Lund wanted a system that could be upgraded to take advantage of ongoing security innovations. "We re-evaluate our security needs and systems every three to five years to keep up with developments in technology," said Drake. "With the IVIS Plus, we can expand our current system as new technology becomes available." Drake said the IVIS Plus has been so effective, Lund is considering the same digital imaging system for its other two locations in Phoenix.
