IDenticard's Access Control System Lands Starring Role in Securing Hollywood's History
Providing unparalleled security, climate control and fire protection, Hollywood Vaults is the hot commodity in cool storage. With a list of clientele that tops the "who's-who" list in the film, television and music industries, Hollywood Vaults' founder and owner David Wexler has created a modern approach to the storage of valuable media materials, offering famous clients round-the-clock access and maximum security in a totally automated building. Located in the heart of Hollywood, the facility provides ideal cold, dry temperatures and humidity conditions for the safe-keeping and long-term preservation of film and media materials.
Upgrading to Maximum Security
Hollywood Vaults recently underwent a major expansion and upgrade of all vault systems, including the installation of IDenticard Systems' Series 9000 access control system. Based in Lancaster, Penna., IDenticard is a leading developer, manufacturer and distributor of security identification, access control and digital imaging systems, and was the first to introduce an interactive link between a security access control system and an electronic imaging system. Providing PIN-code and keypad access, Wexler says the new system is in a whole new league, replacing a previous push-button lock system. The Series 9000 allows for 24-hour client access to this steel and concrete two-story facility, which is often unmanned.
The IDenticard Series 9000 was part of a unique upgrade which completely automated the facility using top-of-the-line products, including many innovative custom-designed items. This project required the installers to work in cold temperatures within the climate-controlled vaults.
Security is extensive, utilizing keypads and locking devices on every door and every vault. Each Hollywood Vault client and their employees are provided with individual PIN numbers, used to first gain access to the parking lot, at the main door to the building, at the individual vault room (there are 8 vault rooms -- with PIN numbers working only on the door to their particular room) and finally to open the client's individual vault.
Working with Don Coker of Seevid, Inc., the local IDenticard rep., Wexler utilized many custom stainless steel components, including selecting a unique, hi-tech keypad, made by Essex, that he chose for its rugged, heavy duty look to match the facility's vault and high-security design. IDenticard's Series 9000 system was flexible enough to recognize the keypad's standard output. A unique relay system monitors the 24 keypads, 142 custom designed and fabricated electric locks that hold the vaults closed until electronically released by the client's PIN number.
According to Coker, the key to the successful application was due in part to extensive pre-planning. Seevid worked closely with the installer, Security Management Services, and the customer throughout the project, discussing the specifics of the system and analyzing its potential benefits. Keeping Wexler in the loop during this process enabled the team to make any necessary adjustments along the way. "It was a unique application," says Coker, "so we wanted it to fit.
"Because of its flexibility, the system really allowed us to provide the maximum solution to this unique situation," Coker explained. "The Series 9000 allowed us to create a sophisticated cause-and-effect setup, linking input/output and the customers' PIN number to uniquely solve their problems."
Even with Hollywood Vaults' administrative office 100 miles away, Wexler is able to remotely access and monitor the entire facility. Because of this off-site office, Wexler chose to limit access to PIN numbers, opting to do without card access. "In this way," Wexler explains, "if a client needs to obtain access for a new employee, we can provide a PIN number over the phone, after verifying identification information, and immediately activate it, without having to wait to create a card, mail it and verify receipt."
Wexler can also generate an audit trail, tracking who comes in, at what time, where they went, and which doors and vaults were entered. Wexler says his clients have amassed a total of over 250 Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and Pulitzers.
