There's much more to today's photo identification card than a smiling face for students, faculty and staff at Franklin College, IN. In fact, a single ID card can be used for everything from gaining entry to the Student Center, to buying a hot dog, making photocopies, or borrowing a laptop. This single-card solution is powered by IDentiPASS, a premier access control solution from IDenticard, a leading producer of biometric identification and access control systems.

A four-year liberal arts and science institution, Franklin College is among a growing number of colleges across the nation to take advantage of the affordability and convenience of a single ID card that accommodates multiple uses. When the college began planning the renovation of the Student Center in August 2004, “Our goal was to make it technology-rich,” said Lisa Fears, director of information technology services. That meant implementing a single-card solution that would accommodate student, faculty and staff photo identification as well as access control, library transactions, and campus-wide debit transactions and functions. “Because the IDentiPASS system interfaces with Blackboard Commerce Suite, our transaction solution, we were able to put in place a seamless solution that makes campus-wide access control and other transactions quick, efficient, convenient and safe.”

IDenticard possessed the technological expertise, experience and capability to integrate the college’s various technologies into one card. For example One Card -- as it is called -- gives Franklin’s 1,000 students and faculty access to all activities and events and other privileges that require photo identification. In addition, this proximity card supports multiple technologies including door access to the Student Center, and bar code technology for library transactions. The card’s magnetic stripe technology accommodates a myriad of financial transactions so students and faculty don’t have to carry cash or credit cards. One Card corresponds to debit accounts that can be used for dining and mail services, Student Center vending machines, the college bookstore, and photocopying and printing.
IDenticard partner Koorsen Fire and Security, headquartered in Indianapolis, installed and maintains the system at Franklin. As a longtime vendor for Franklin College’s fire equipment and security services, Koorsen was perfectly poised to step up to the plate when it came time to design and install the new access control and CCTV systems for the campus’ renovated Student Center. “Franklin’s information technology services staff was impressed by the flexibility of the IDentiPASS system, which enables them to continue to expand access control capabilities across campus at their own pace,” said Scott Wheatley, security integration consultant, Koorsen. Koorsen provides fire, safety and security services throughout the Midwest and South.
